We would like to discuss traffic lights and how they impeed small business and our own service vehicles. First off smart signals do not change when 10 cars are coming down a street and one car wishes to pull onto the street. Smart signals make the person pullin gout wait longer and until no cars are coming and signals are timed so that flow of traffic stays at a proper rate in the city all directions. Bill Gates in his early years wrote programs to measure traffic flow and now Battelle Research does much work in this area. How much is lost annually to bad planning? Lots, just ask this recent research company out of D.C. http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/stories/2003/05/26/daily19.html?f=et50 in there study on Atlanta known for it's horrible traffic. But this is not the only bad spot, try Boston, LA, Seattle, Dallas during rush hours. Free parking on the FWY basically and if you hit Chicago, St. Louis or any large 1 million plus metro same thing? Why? Too many cars and improper flow and planning. Cities buy the cheap signals which are not intelligent and then businesses lose productivity and the city loses slaes tax revenue from lost business on everything except the car sales. Short sided thinking really. A set of signals on a busy street could cost upwards of $400,000 for the good ones and as little as $150,000 for the stupid ones we are talking about. Therefore saving a mere 250,000 dollars now will hurt or criple businesses, increase costs and less employees paying in and less sales generated will mean and expotential loss later on. Bad planning, linear thinking and stupid government planners and bureaucrats wasting money on pet projects instead of important issues of flow and infrastructure. Who pays? We all do and not only in time, quality of life issues and more cars at idle pollute five times as much. Everyone loses event he envrionment. Our grid based marketing proigrams work well when they are allowed to have adequate flow from traffic to conserve time to help us keep prices lower for consumers, meaning more people participate and more sales are generated, more people employed and more tax revenue for municipalities, states and the federal government too. For things like protecting America with smart bombs. Think about it we use smart bombs to kill our enemies and dumb signals to kill our economy. Hey dummies anyone listening out there? Traffic accidents from improper turn lane signals is the number one cause of teenage death, automoboile accidents. More people die per week in auto accidents than the Sept. 11 attacks. Think about it. More deaths, more pollution, less tax revenue and less jobs, all to save a little on cheap signal lights in a time of recession. Save a little now kill a lot of people later? Why? that is insanity. Maybe we cannot fix the world completely but ignoring the obvious is just plain stupid like the signals we put in turning red when no one is around, causing traffic and inhibiting flow patterns.
