As we enter this new century we see a continued and renewed fervor for increasing speed, efficiency and capacity of our rail system. A system which has not changed all that much since Geroge Stevenson developed the first locamotive steam engine. We have seen some pretty incredible innovations and were quite impressed when we visited the rail and aviation museum in Pueblo Colorado not more than 15 miles from the DOT Research Facility. Back during the cold war they experimented with jet powered locamotives. This ideas have not died check out what one company is doing to develop a 240 km/hr locomotive: http://www.you.com.au/news/1338.htm ------ It sure is very pretty; http://www.eastnorthumberland.com/news/april_2003/keeping_track4.html ------- Today we are considering many types of propulsion such as scandia's Pulsed Linear Induction Motor: http://www.sandia.gov/seraphim/Documents/SAND95.pdf ----- We see the Japanese, French, germans and even we are using Bullet type high-speed trains every day. The French have the TGV Grande Vitesse, Then there is the EuroStar, Germans have the ICE 3 and we have the Scela Express, And the Series 700 Nozomi JR-50 is very cool. You can even buy a simulator for your computer to be your own conductor of a bullet train between trips to your refrigerator. http://www.rcsimulations.com/highspeed.htm ------- Things such as cross wind components not normally an issue are omnipotent to high speed trains: http://www.ebp.ch/files/projekte/1072.Paper%20Risk%20Assessment%20Strong%20Winds.pdf ----- If you would like to learn more about trains and the advancements in this sector of our economy you may wish to check out these pages: http://ntl.bts.gov/display.cfm?sub=c1&cat=3 ----- If you need a train washed call us, because the boundry layer of dirt can actually effect the performance of the train. No kidding. http://www.detailguys.com/nw85.shtml
