Volvo has been working on airbags in the ceiling of their new SUV and in the sides. Here is how it works. The SUV has a gyro inside of it, if the vehicles leaves the ground for a rollover, it senses this and pops all the airbags like the Mars lander. You are riding inside of a small enclosure filled with air filled bean bag chairs. You will not get hurt. One problem however is multiple rollovers down a hill where once the first few rolls are over the airbags collapse and/or puncture and you still get to die. If this concerns you, you can always sue for your death call the Crash Test attorneys; http://statewidecrashworthinessattorneys.com/ Volvo may have the answer? Here are the tests; http://apps.edmunds.com/reviews/roadtests/roadtest/95661/article.html and they have been getting a lot of press on this as safety has been in the news a lot. http://www.msnbc.com/news/900575.asp?cp1=1 . Side airbags are available in Renault, BMW and now even Toyota has options. Many of the recent tests by the NTSB on SUVs have come to the conclusion that safety in SUVs and cars from side impact from SUV T-Bone accidents for instance this cool picture: http://www1.tpgi.com.au/users/mpaine/curtain.html . All of us have seen wicked crashes and even had to wait in traffic, now here are some cool ones, which no one got hurt in. The EU has a group similar to the NTSB and DOT testing. http://www.euroncap.com/index.htm . Volvo has them all beat now; http://www1.tpgi.com.au/users/mpaine/ncaplist.html . This may also be the answer to the GM and Ford problem with 15 passenger vans along with the special system called StabilTrak. GMC Starilitrak is the answer to the problems with the 15 passenger vans. For instance the system works well and is available to many GM models presently including the executive and government secret service versions of the GM SUVs and it is only for GM now and it is available on the XL 1500's standard engine is the option to add StabiliTrak. It is called "An advanced stability system" and GM claims that "StabiliTrak's sophisticated sensors tap into the suspension, steering, antilock braking and traction control systems, constantly measuring steering angle, wheel speeds, brake pressure, lateral and longitudinal acceleration and yaw rate (the vehicle rotation rate), such as when cornering." By using these systems along with four-wheel disc, four-wheel antilock brakes with dual piston calipers and Dynamic Rear Proportioning GM believes this will ensure quick stops for emergency situations. This will also have a special "dual-stage, dual-level airbag system is also standard, which uses a sensing system to automatically deactivate the passenger-side airbag under certain conditions to protect children." If you look at the progress coming soon to the private sector in SUVs no one will be able to say that they are not safe, they may say they are too expensive for Jesus and his friends, but certainly they will be safe. And of course we will detail them; http://www.detailguys.com
