Daimler Chrysler leads the field on the Pedestrian Radar Systems. One DOT project radars and when it sees a pedestrian it changes it's sign to warn motorists. http://www.state.me.us/mdot/planning/research/newsletter0901.pdf and this one http://152.99.129.29/its/cdrom/3143.pdf In this unit designed by Japanese, it provides some unique and important ideas we can use for Homeland Security. The Chrysler unit will identify in a cross walk and alert the driver of the SUV, this might also be good for garbage trucks, delivery trucks, taxi cabs and buses in the future once the price comes down for the technology research. In the IV 2003 Report of the 2002 session of the IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Vehicles took place on the week of June 17-21 in Versailles and there was much discussion of Daimler Chryslers innovations, which started out of the Huge SUV parallel parking issues as Soccer Mom's with Excursions, Suburbans and Dodge Dually Trucks had issues at schools, parking and fitting into the garage at home with inches to spare. http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/traffops/signtech/newtech/agenda/Agenda082202.pdf and http://www.daimlerchrysler.de/research/htr2001/pdf_e/driving5_e.pdf . How is this done exactly? Well you may have seen the movie Terminator III where the robot anti-personal machines gunned down people with a gattling guns. There are two ways to identify people. One is easy by way of thermo detection since people have the same temperature. Opposed to animals having different temps. You simply set the unit to view human being body temps, but you could stil hit a dear, elk or range roaming cow on a some back road. A better way is this technology. http://www.umiacs.umd.edu/~ramani/pubs/eccv00.pdf The cross walks may become safer than ever before. Many states are very serious about cross walks, the Upper New England States are quite serious about pedestrian right away. California is another very pro-pedestrian state. Many other countries lose thousands of people per year from pedestrian drove overs. Look at the UK statisitics http://www.hullcc.gov.uk/roadsafety/accident_statistics/pedestrian_casualty_age.php ----- And do not forget all those signs share the roads with bicyclists. Having riden my bicycle from Oregon to Mexico in six days on a charity ride, I can tell you how appreciative it is for raod sharing. http://www.transalt.org/blueprint/chapter17/chapter17b.html ------ http://www.car-accident-lawyers-attorneys.com/car_accident_statistics.html . These technologies will be able to help motorists, pedestrians and mankind become safer, more efficient and improve quality of life as soon as the prices for such techology comes down.
