Thoughts of the week for California Schools. We have previously discussed the issues with new teachers and teacher retention in this country and the rising problems with performance and the reality of the level of worked that is truly involved and the expectations of the work load prior to going to work as a new teacher. I interviewed a teacher today and she told me in her school district that there was less than 50% retention in the first three years of new teachers fresh out of school with teaching credentials. She said it was the shock of the reality of teaching in today’s schools. And teaching in places like California with the schools in dire financial straights is an even bigger issue. As per Proposition 98: Schools get the money first and then 40% from its general fund and then the general fund pays interest on the public debt, namely state issued; state issued general obligation bonds and muni bonds. Unfortunately; California is broke and no credit. http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/stories/2003/07/21/daily67.html?f=et79 And mind you CA is not alone in such situations. But they are far worse off and today could not even get their budget voted upon. And in California the kids have fewer parents per household than any other state. California housing bad and worse; http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/stories/2003/07/21/daily7.html?f=et79 . Some of the funds are okay like Sacremento SMUD. Others are frivolous baseball parks and special pet projects to appease voters for re-election of which Gray is superbly suited at. Most teachers have excellent degrees and credentials, but what they really need is degrees in psychology, baby-sitting, parenting, self-defense and criminology and juvenile delinquency. Then they need someone to wash their cars. http://www.carwashguy.com
