At an all-night Starbucks in Wichita KS, I met with a man said to have been laid off by Raytheon and was upset, extremely at the treatment and the "here is your box, this is the security guard who will help you with your transition" Meaning your job is terminated and you have an hour to leave the building with all of your stuff. No warning, no notice, good bye. That was it. He therefore had a change of heart as to our country's great land of opportunity and said we should immitate Germany. Well today we find that the worst unemployment in the country for cities of 1 million is Portland OR at 8.8% over all. http://www.bizjournals.com/portland/stories/2003/07/28/daily27.html?f=et75 . Germany of course is only 19% overall. Imagine someone arguing with me in a civilized fashion the strengths and weaknesses of the two countries. Germany and THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. You see one is capitalized for a very strong reason. How can anyone compare systems of governments and freedoms between these two nations. Obviously we are doing something right. Lets see 8.8% in Portland or 19% nationwide in Germany, and folks their unemployment is growing ours is leveling off, but even if it were not, that is a lot of disperity don't you think? Now mind you in Vancouver, WA across the river one of the hardest hit regions in our country is said to be at 10% give or take a few points. South East of Chicago there is a few areas at 11.1% and a few areas such as Kocomo in IN with very high rates. Yuma AZ with snow birds gone is extremely high although that is an issue of seasonality really. But all in all as things stand even the worst of the worst is not nearly as bad as the entire country they call Germany. Why? Socialism. It does not work as well as capitalism. It is interesting to compare the two and fun to be debating on the side of Capitalism. And although I can debate both sides if I were forced to, I would never volunteer to debate on the side of Socialism. First off the deck is stacked against anyone betting on that side. Not that a challenge is not appreciated, but that is a huge handicap to overcome and way too many car lengths in my humble opinion. Well our debate at the all night Starbucks yielded no changing of his mind. He simply started yawning when he saw how useless it is to argue with a true believer in all that is good with our Friedman Economic System. The poor guy probably went home exhausted and had to re-think his entire debate structure and well he should and so should anyone who is about to give up on capitalism especially as the cycle has already started the upward trend. If anyone wishes to debate the merits of true capitalism and free markets and the strength and will of the American People with me, shoot me an email, but be prepared to lose if you bet against this great nation or its loyal supporters.
