Some UAVs will be almost totally autonomous, while other can be flown. It maybe necessary to maintain radio silence for long periods and quick signal pulses for GPS locking and/or self destruct signals or termination commands. One thing that is interesting is that most of these UAVs we have seen by Universities and big name thinkers have landing gears, which seems to be a waste of weight, although it does not have to me. A landing gear has to be strong and could be made to also be an antenna so a signal could be sent with low power over much longer distances. And under and around and through tree tops.
