How close are house hold Robots to the average middle class family in America? Well perhaps closer than you think. As technology goes towards DARPA efforts for autonomous UAVs and underwater subs and now the million dollar contest for a self propelled pilot less car out West, it will drive from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. There has been much talk for many years and science fiction writers from the Robinson Family and their “Robot” and then R2D2 and C3PO in Star Wars and even George Jetson had an in house robot housekeeper. Well today we are much closer to that reality. These things do exist and they do much more than fight each other on RoboWars on Tech TV. As a matter of fact I keep getting a SPAM email telling me to buy one online, which is a RoboSweeper for tile floors and hard wood areas of my mansion? HA HA, not bad for a homeless person I can actually get a couple of them? http://www.tvmarket.net/products/product.aspx?id=6579 . One ongoing Robotic Company has developed a base Robot as a platform to allow others to develop applications for it, which judging by history of Computer Game Companies, Hardware Companies, VHS that ought to be a good idea; http://www.iRobot.com . For the sum of $795 Friendly Machines RL500 will mow your lawn, a task, which is competing against the incredible exploitation of the Ride On Lawn Mowers across rural America. Right now it is Wal-Marts fastest growing lines of products. http://www.parthe.net/_cwg0503/00000086.htm . And let us say you want a vacuum cleaner to clean the house and that is the most common type of Robot for the home currently. Friendly Machines Corporation http://www.FriendlyRobotics.com an Israeli firm will send you a $1,000 vacuum cleaner that uses sonar to recognize walls and objects, such as Fido the Cat or the Family Dog Socks, as it sucks up all the dirt in the house. And the company is now testing in the final development, a robot assistant that can lift, push, pull, or haul away anything weighing less than 150 pounds including your ex-girlfriend or Mother in Law? Eureka seeing these advancements has developed their own unit also around $1,000.00 http://www.eureka.com . Very cool look at some of these pictures: http://www.eureka.com/whatsnew/robotvacupdate.htm . And hey what if you want a robot which can vacuum and deliver you a White Russian while you watch O’Reilly Show? Yep, can do; Company: Pittsburgh ProBotics “CYE” $695.00 and with attachments HA- It can even do the dishes: http://www.probotics.com and this company has come a long way too, many new achievements of worthy note for the rich and lazy American or just the person who loves new electronic toys to impress himself and friends? Then there is the DC06 Robotic Vacuum $3500 Ouch, but this unit has had the best ratings; http://www.dyson.com It appears that the entrepreneur is the way of the future and that is where the funding is coming from; http://www.dyson.com/testhouse/testhouse.asp Besides of course the excellent showing by the US government under the newest issue of International Terrorism. Look at some of these excellent uses for border patrolling: http://www.sandia.gov/isrc/SARGE.html and http://www.msnbc.com/modules/newsweek/newsletter/futurewar.asp . Hats off to the Navy also; http://www.spawar.navy.mil/robots/pubs/ugvhist95-nopix.pdf . And the Army; http://www.redstone.army.mil/ugvsjpo/ and of course the UAVs we have all been studying and the innovations there are moving at lightening speed; http://www.parthe.net/_cwg0703/00000043.htm and http://www.parthe.net/_cwg0703/00000039.htm and http://www.parthe.net/_cwg0703/00000065.htm and http://www.parthe.net/_cwg0703/00000061.htm etc. And for Coal Mine Rescue, mine mapping and safety issues: http://www.cmu.edu/cmnews/030625/030625_minemap.html More pictures of ground hog; http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~thrun/3D/mines/groundhog/web/index2.html 513 more pictures; http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~thrun/3D/mines/groundhog/web/indexall.html . Then there are human rights and incredible issues with land mines http://www.ameriwebtek.com/dpk/robot.htm and http://www.jinjapan.org/nipponia/nipponia13/sp05.html . It will not be long before your add on brain will be a wearable computer capable of even more tasks; http://www.cc.gatech.edu/ai/robot-lab/tmr/skillsassessment.pdf The future is going to make your life easier and it will all start at home for you. But you will also be able to take it all on the road. Your car will be robotic and we are seeing the development of radar braking systems for obstacles, Heads Up Displays with fog night vision and controls, soon we see voice activated controls, we are seeing automatic rollover sensors which deploy air bags as your SUV starts to roll over, smart airbag systems, anti-skidding over correction turning control. But all this is merely a continuation form friction locking seatbelts, EGT systems, anti-lock brakes and buzzers, GPS systems, automatic adjusting seats to fit driver, etc. The car is getting smarter and will have some fuzzy logic capabilities and soon optical recognition, voice recognition. Aircraft can practically fly themselves in zero/zero visibility, trains soon we go without any human error or game playing union locomotive operators. We already have people movers and trolleys unmanned. There is talk about hydro cushioned ferries, over the road trucks and heavy equipment is being tested by caterpillar in AZ without people and using GPS and satellite controls. The fact is as things get better and better and we are able to align satellites with lasers, and get better accuracy soon you can count on a perfect landing, ferry arrival, safe trucking, on schedule distribution. This is the way of the future. Machines will serve man and be designed to do so. This will be the same as the Utopia that the privileged had at the expense of the slaves without cruelty to human beings, this is a great time to be living on the surface of the planet and you will not even recognize your middle class lifestyle in 20 years. This is going to be quite a rush and the United States must continue to lead the way and power up the future. You car is going to be fully automated; And when you get there? A robot will even park your car, HEY, that is what I call a valet; Robotic Parking http://www.roboticparking.com/ . Is robotics new, no not really take the pool industry for instance. For decades the pool cleaning industry has sold robotic pool cleaners and lately they are getting quite sexy and with many new features; http://www.aquavacsystems.com/ and http://www.polarispoolsystems.com/home.htm and http://www.baracuda.com/ and The Robotics Industry Association estimates that 200,000 plus robots working and showing up on time to do this work, without striking in U.S. factories. Now we are seeing the technology, economics, and the inspiration of robotics research teams to bring robots into our homes. All the technology and R and D we are spending on now is going to propel your quality of life at home. We see a time when a Robot will even wash your car. After all they can pump your gas? http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/1997/Apr-13-Sun-1997/business/5185447.html Car Washing will come within the decade, until then only trust your car to humans who work for the Car Wash Guys; http://www.CarWashGuys.com We believe the future Robot "WashBot" will use a low heat plasma torch to conserve water and give you a deep clean. See this page for other interesting innovations including the Plasma Car Wash http://www.parthe.net/_cwg0503/0000007c.htm . Care to discuss the future with me? Actually we can just as much fun discussing the present, then can't we: Lance@carwashguys.com
