Analyzing poem about money; “It's Not Just Money” It's not just money. It's freedom. The freedom to control your time, Put food in your mouth, Put a roof over your head. The physical body Has physical needs, And we must pay for the privilege To exist on Planet Earth. And for the human spirit To inhabit the human body, The body must be comfortable and safe And its bodily needs handled. Otherwise the spirit keeps its distance And the body suffers. --- Money comes via creating value for others, Value which others are willing to pay for. Everyone has the challenge of figuring out Their own solution to this....Good luck.... --------------------------------- The money topic the way in which it is portrayed is good enough for common man understanding and certainly would make a man think. However on further look it is apparent that some additional insight is needed otherwise the reader gets the wrong idea. As far as luck, is it really luck? Do you believe in luck? Because some how and from a scientific standpoint, I don't. And as we look at American societies people have made a social contract in life to live in societies due to our human nature as social beings. We have created money so someone who needs a loaf of bread but only has a cow or goat can trade. He sells the goat and can buy the bread because the guy who has the bread does not need a goat, cow or pig. You see, it is a unit of trade. A dollar is 1/580 th of a cow. It is equal to one loaf of bread. Being able to trade simplifies our lives and gives us time to be humans and use this large cranial cavity to create, dream, build and enjoy this cognitive ability, which gives us insight to bettering our selves and others. Without such a unit of trade to encompass the food shelter and clothing and other desires of our species we cannot partake in the things, which make us feel fulfilled. When someone denies what they really need for fulfillment for something that others might want, therefore elevating their personal social status by way of objects or things, this too fulfills them since Maslow also predicts people want social status. When people trade that which they want over and above the things they need. They have made a poor and willful decision that they must live with. By doing so, they may live poorer health or less fulfilled in one respect but more fulfilled in the perceived social status. You see. If the person or individual makes such choices then it is their folly, which brings us to your arguement of rich people who are unfulfilled and lonely. True enough. A person can be rich and happy or poor and happy, rich and sad or poor and sad. Or dead and not exist at all. Of all these scenarios; probably the best combination would be rich and happy in this present period in this particular country in 2004. But rich and happy is a difficult balance is it not. Hats off to those who are in that space, for it is the most livable and desired place to be. It makes life easier and allows us to pursue a path which makes us fulfilled. But they can just as easily end up in one of the other three boxes tomorrow or void of life. The trick is if you leave the present space can you end up in the poor and happy until you regain your Rich and Happy box space. Many are rich and happies have lived in the poor and unhappy and poor and happy boxes previously and looking back although not too bad in hindsight they would rather not return, knowing that once in the better box you can live a life of purpose and meaningful endeavors, so it is very easy for them to live in the rich and happy box while on the rich hemisphere of the said box. Now with this information and all these damn boxes, I present to you the out of the box lifestyle, one, which best fulfills your soul. For instance my life style is unique living on the road, traveling etc. http://www.carwashguys.com/blitz.html , but simultaneously able to transverse into the other boxes at will to discuss with those in those spaces, I can gain significant enlightenment as to over all society, social norms and problems associated with such classifications and those in transit or in between boxes. I have to ask why allow money to pigeon hole your life. Why live in a box? Well you can certainly keep your money in a box, I do. Most people keep their money in the system whether or not they live in it. But should you personally live in one? No. The poem is interesting because it classifies everything as if it all relates to money. And while it cannot be argued that Money is needed here at this time and place, someday it will not be needed at all. But money is not bad or evil or controlling, money is neutral. It has nothing to do with luck. You must respect money, just like you respect the cow, the pig or the loaf of bread. Just like the other foods, shelter and clothing, which is needed to sustain life. Because that is what money is. You should respect a dollar bill, not necessarily the government, which has borrowed it to put into circulation or the Private Bank which produced it. You should respect it exactly as you would respect exactly one loaf of bread or 1/580 th of a cow. Or 1/20,000 th of a car. Or 1/180,000 th of a House in Houston or 1/3 of a cup of go go juice with neuron exciters from Starbucks? You see? Would you throw out a cup of coffee you just bought? Would you break off a piece of your house and put it out with the trash? No. Then respect your money for what it represents. I think this poem fails in that regard to do this or to help the reader understand the value of money or even it’s purpose or why it exists. This poem seems to incite the reader unnecessarily because if you go back in time to early man who spent much time finding, hunting for food, you can see the reason why money in a society is preferable to no money. Today he can work and buy the food in less time with money left over for other things he might fancy and he has the awesome ability to choose what he wants within reason to fulfill his being. In trade for this he has the comforts of civilization and all it has to offer, that is a beautiful and wonderful gift. People who live in the US do have clean water, few die between ages of 1-10, healthy active and enlightened if they choose. Free to think, discuss and live and pursue their happiness. They can fool themselves by thinking they can buy their way into happiness too, that is a choice and an experience. Maybe they can fool themselves, maybe not. If they can are they not happy too? If they are fulfilled in that regard more power to them. If not the problem is not with the money it is not evil and does not work against them. We make choices and live with those choices. That is good, that is fair and just. Those who wish to make more of it, will have less time to enjoy it now and more time later. They can also buy back time with money if they have developed a balanced life and good foundation. You see? Or they can also go back to a time of a happier them. I meet people every day who wish to be happy again and find that working and owning their own business makes them happy and fulfilled, they maybe taking a temporary pay cut, but do not care. Happiness, like time, and everything else is relative. If some one cheats themselves out of the pain and sorrow, then of course they will have an issue with the what true happiness really is. Fore to understand the true gift of happiness you must also have to experience the other at least once, or else you cannot understand or even feel empathy for those currently in that space of perpetual strife. Fulfilled lives can be had with or without money. But you can certainly do more with money than without, but those without can do more with less money due to their experience in doing without. You see? However such insight is not made possible with this poem. You do not have to pay to experience life on the Planet? That is mean of the author to suggest that to the reader. I take exception of this attitude and strange way of attacking a neutral object such as money, without regards to how it has made mankind’s lives much easier. Money is not necessary to experience life or happiness or thought. It costs very little to think. Buy some celery and peanut butter and you can be fulfilled and have the protein to think and experience the joy and laughter with another or by yourself on a walk. Money does not necessarily come from creating value to other entities, it can come from causing harm to fellow entities too. But money made in that way has attached to it the Karma which is carried thru in all activities. Money being neutral is only as good as the person holding it. Man is not perfect, therefore the way he uses money cannot be. Money comes from a printing press. That is where it comes from. It is created and backed by government’s credit to a private bank. Then the money is put into existence and is lended to banks who in turn lend it to people and businesses. And we all use it as a unit of trade so we do not have to walk around shaving off a section of our live cow every time we need a haircut, fuel, food or drink? You see? This work might give the wrong impression to someone, since money is very much not understood in our society. This poem does an injustice to the reader. If this poem was given to someone coming from a place were money did not exist or to build rules for a robot or explaining it to a Native from the Amazon, who has never been in contact with it, the poem falls short in many ways. You see? And you can also see why people who complain about money or blame it for the follies of man are incorrect completely. People laid off will complain it is always about the money. No one cares? Everyone complains about and most marriages that go astray do so over money. Why? This poem also allows the reader to look for a scapegoat for his/her woes. The Money, but it is not the money that determines happiness, so pointing that out is of no value. But disrespecting money in a poem is like calling an ocean wave, a rock or a mountain an enemy or evil. It is neither. These along with money are all neutral. The poem might help some who struggles with money who already lives in the system were money is used understand why it is important to not shun money completely. However it does so at the expense of the holder of the money. Depending on your choices you can live on very little money. Very little. And in many parts of this country we once lived with none. We traded a lot. Ask the American Indians, huge numbers of people living together without money. It worked, the advancement of mankind owes a lot to the fact that money has allowed us to accomplish so much. Next time someone complains about money, look at that person and see if their complaints are justified before allowing into your belief system that money is evil? It is not good or bad. Niether are the people with it or without it. Money is a reflection and magnification of our whole of society. Do not blame it on the money. Here are some quotes we have collected about money. Found on this site: http://quotations.about.com/cs/moretypes/a/bls_money.htm . Read these and think about them a bit. If you want more in 2004 then you are going to have to come to terms with your fears and understanding of our currency and what it represents. If you think about this concept in deep thought and come to similar or different thoughts on the matter, email me: Lance@carwashguys.com .
