Young person wants to start a small businesses at his house and asks us for a little advice, he writes: "I was thinking about starting a car wash at my house, and just putting up a sign up at the highway, when people come to bring there car should they stay or leave , what do you think thanks?" "I am just a kid as you can tell not going to steal any business from you." "p.s are do you wash there car at there house or work, I just dont know where to do it." ------------------ Well first we applaud the efforts of young people getting into business and learning about free enterprise and self employment, after all it was not all that long ago: http://www.carwashguys.com/history/beginning.html . We understand what makes this country great and it is never to young for young people to learn what it takes to succeed in their own business whether it is a Donald Trump Lemonade Stand or Car Wash Business. Here is our advice to the young man Who signs his name: "Duck Hunter" --------------- Dear Duck Hunter and Car Washer, Here is our advise to your car wash business in your drive way: 1.) Print some flyers to go around the neighborhood with. Set your price at $5.00 to start and then change the price if you get too busy. Only put up the signs on weekends if you think the city might get upset. 2.) Go to McDonalds and ask for an old pickle bucket, these are 5 gallon buckets that they bring pickles to the store in and then they get rid of them. 3.) Get some old towels at a garage sale or around the house that your family no longer needs and does not want back. 4.) Make sure you have a shut off nozzle on the garden hose so you do not waste water. If there is a water shortage get flyers from the city on ways to save water and give them to your customers to stay on the good side of the code enforcement people. 5.) Read Tom Sawyer so you can understand how to delegate. Also read the "E-Myth" so you can understand business. And lastly read "Customers for Life" by Carl Sewell this will help you understand customer service and how that relates to business. 6.) Try to figure out a way to get the water to not flow into the street and divert it onto the lawn or away from gutter. 7.) Do not ruin the families vacuum cleaner, take really good care of it, until you can go buy one on your own. A shop vac from Home Depot or Lowes. 8.) Offer your customers waxing and detailing to make extra money for times when business is slow. Do not make the mistakes of those kids selling Lemonade on the Donald Trump Reality TV show, you are smarter and better than they are, see these attachments for detailing information. 9.) Always thank your customers very much and ask them if they would tell their friends so you can make more money to save for college or other important things you need to help out your family. 10.) Do not ever give up. So many people quit just before they succeed. a.) Always try the best in everything you do. b.) Always do what you say you are going to do. Your word is important. c.) If someone tells you that you cannot do something, don't listen. What they don't know is when they say those things they are really talking to themselves not you. They are saying to themselves; "I can't do what you are trying to do, and this is why I know you cannot do it." In fact you can if you believe you can, no one can stop you. You must stay committed. (Print this part of this email #10 and tape it on the back of your door to your room). d.) Always be nice to people and help them too. e.) Do not let your grades suffer in school, you have to be good a both, Learning is a life time thing, you have to always keep your mind learning new things and stay focused on your projects.
