Book Review; Start Small, Finish Big-Fifteen Lessons to Start-and Run a Successful Business. By Fred Deluca (co-founder of Subway Franchise System) and John P. Hayes franchise advisor.
Great book, people who I personally admire were listed in this book. Jim Cavanah founder of JaniKing who I have met, Founder of the Limited who Sam our franchisee in OH worked for as a CFO. Tom Morrales a caterer to the stars who is a customer of our Nashville franchisees. Zig Ziglar an author I respect and a man who would never give up and finally made it telling others to never give up. Mary Ellen Sheets who I had the pleasure of meeting through the IFA at a meeting in Las Vegas four years ago. Paul Orfalea who I listen to once speak at a University and whose first copy store Kinkos was three units away from my brothers coffee shop at UCSB. And of course, Fred Deluca who I talked with and sat in on a small meeting of about twenty franchisors at a table discussion at an IFA meeting in which Jim Cavanah also spoke.
The book was similar to the stories of Dave Thomas, Tom Monahan, Bob Rosenburgh, Ray Kroc and many other I have read in Fortune Magazine rich and famous and Profiles of Genius and many other stories in Financial Times, WSJ, motivational tapes. I compare the stories to Horatio Honda, Nolan Bushnell, Dell, Howard Hughes, Fred Smith, Marcel Bich, Rockefeller, Gates, etc. It talked mostly about dedication, customer drivers, and perserverance. Great book for those who refuse to surrender and promise never to give up. I will give anyone on my team, three times the cost of this book off their royalties if they buy a copy. It is $10.00 and change and can be bought at any Subway sandwich shop or online at amazon.com or found out Books a Million, Crown, B Dalton, Walton, Barnes and Noble or Borders Books.
