In Arizona 15% more cars produced after 1996 are failing than before. But before you say; "Yah, so what?" Let me tell you that is five times as high. This is not good for those companies like us with delivery or service vehicles which could cost us triple in repair bills. Good for mechanics, but there is a shortage of those, even with the new training system to train former prison inmates for maintenance jobs. Previously the failure rate was an acceptable 3.2%. But the tests have changed, changed also in NV. They thought the change was estimated to increase failure rate to as high as 9.9% which they knew would be a touchy issue, but this is now 15% and it is scary. Light-Mid Duty trucks such as WashGuys and Oil Change Guys Prototype Units are 19.2% failure rate with the new computer system tests, previously the tail pipe tests were 6.5%. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality said "well the tests are twice as tough?" This means increased business for those who do preventative maintenance and for those who do smog type mechanic work. Emissions Testing is changing and so are the suburbs and their air quality in areas of AZ. More people, increased humidity, and more cars and traffic and idling engines are the cause. With health issues looming and environmentalists moving in to AZ from CA, this is a predictable event. One other interesting issue is that many will have to park those vehicles or sell them to the neighboring country and let them move over the border for use there. If they are not stolen they will be sent to Mexico. This means continued new car sales in AZ. This is fine by us as long as people do not buy cars where dealerships or manufacturuers guarantee shortened engine oil change intervals or free oil changes for the life of your car.
