Before Adding a Car Wash to Your Quick Lube, Learn About Car Washes. 2002 Automatic Car Wash Survey is of Interest ---- Auto Laundry News has produced it's 2002 Car Wash Survey and we believe some of the figures are interesting. One interesting item on the survey is where are car washes located? In residential area? 41% in a Commercial zone 55% in and Industrial area only 4%. Many of you realize we are constantly discussing the importance of location. 81% of the car washes surveyed claimed ot be in a middle class area. 12% in a low income area. 7% stated they were in a high income area meaning they have extreme RE costs, no doubt. 52% said they washed more cars in 2002 than previous years. Make since because car washes track the new car sales for 3-5 years afterwards and new car sales hovered at 16.9 million cars mostly due to GM and Ford, Chrysler 0/0 programs. But 25% said less cars, probably due to less jobs or slight economic collapse in their areas. 13% of car washes now have web sites. 30% of car washes say they have competing car washes within their 5 mile trade zone, this number is up. 60% of carwashes pay between $6-8.00 per hour to employees. But this is up 32% pay above $8.00 per hour. Fridays and Saturdays are still the best day for car washes. 82% say Sat. Average car wash cleans 20,264 cars per year. Pretty good. 51% of carwashes have no uniforms, ouch, that is bad for the image of car washes in the country and really quite inexcusable in Car Wash Guys Opinion. 55% of car wash owners only own one car wash. Highest costs are elctricity and water and labor. Chemicals and soap next. Best car wash month of the year has been consistent it is March on average. Jan-Mar. best on average due to East Coast weather and slat and chemicals on the road making carwashing a more serious issue. Weat Coast the numbers are different. How do we feel about this data? We cannot have an opinion due to franchise laws, but find this survey interesting no doubt.
